SEC is private pay only for the following reasons:
Tailored Assessments: Without the constraints of insurance company policies, SEC can customize its assessments to fit the unique needs of the client.
Avoiding Insurance Restrictions: Insurance companies often dictate the types of assessments or services they will reimburse, which often do not align with best practices in psychoeducational evaluations.
Time for In-Depth Evaluations: Private pay allows the evaluator to spend more time conducting thorough assessments, as they are not bound by the reduced reimbursement rates and time limits set by insurance.
Broader Testing Options: Some necessary assessments (e.g., for learning disabilities, giftedness, or ADHD) may not be covered by insurance, enabling the business to offer services that would otherwise be inaccessible.
Educational vs. Medical Needs: Insurance often categorizes psychoeducational evaluations as educational rather than medical, which can make them ineligible for reimbursement.
Focus on Diagnoses: Insurance typically requires a diagnosis for reimbursement, which may not align with the evaluator’s purpose of identifying learning profiles or recommending school accommodations.
Direct Relationship with Clients: Private pay fosters a direct relationship with families, avoiding third-party involvement and fostering trust and communication.\
Fewer Limitations on Follow-Up: Insurance might restrict follow-up sessions or comprehensive feedback, whereas private pay ensures families receive detailed explanations and support.
Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) often reimburse the cost of a psychoeducational evaluation.
