Independent Psychoeducational Evaluations

FAQs
-
An IEE is a comprehensive assessment conducted by an independent psychologist to better understand a child’s strengths, challenges, and learning needs. Unlike a school-based evaluation, an IEE offers an objective perspective that isn’t influenced by school personnel, often providing more individualized recommendations.
-
There are many reasons to consider an IEE for your child. For example, you might consider an IEE if you would like a private evaluation that may or may not be shared with your child’s school, if your child is homeschooled, if you feel your child’s needs weren’t fully understood in a previous assessment, if you want a second opinion, or if the school’s evaluation was limited in scope or depth.
-
Under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), schools must consider the results of an IEE in making decisions about your child’s educational plan. While schools aren’t required to implement every recommendation, they are obligated to take the findings seriously.
-
The assessments vary based on the specific needs of the child but often include cognitive testing, academic achievement tests, and assessments of social-emotional functioning, behavior, and adaptive skills. Additional measures might be used if specific learning disabilities, attention difficulties, or emotional concerns are suspected.
-
An IEE can provide an in-depth understanding of your child’s learning style, strengths, and areas needing support. The results can guide decisions about educational placements, accommodations, interventions, and therapies that may better support your child’s success in school.
-
The cost varies depending on the complexity of the evaluation and the specific assessments required. SEC is self-pay only. This allows for an expanded evaluation that is not “controlled” by insurance companies. Controlling what assessment tools can and cannot be utilized is not best practice and is not condoned by SEC.
-
Some testing may be scheduled during school hours, but we strive to minimize disruptions. Testing sessions can often be arranged to work around your child’s school schedule, including Saturday appointments. We will work together to find times that are convenient for both you and your child.
-
If warranted, the IEE will result in a diagnosis, such as a specific learning disorder, ADHD, or an emotional disorder. However, our goal is not solely diagnosis; it’s to understand your child’s unique learning profile and provide recommendations that best support their educational and developmental needs.
-
Ensure your child gets a good night’s sleep and a healthy meal before each testing session, as focus and energy are essential for an accurate evaluation. If you child is taking any medication (e.g., for ADHD, anxiety, depression, etc.), continue to take it per their normal schedule. It’s also helpful to encourage your child to simply do their best and let them know there are no right or wrong answers.
-
If there are differences, I can help explain the findings and discuss potential reasons for any discrepancies. My goal is to provide you with a thorough and unbiased understanding of your child’s needs, which can be a valuable addition to the school’s data in developing an effective plan.
-
Yes, I provide specific, actionable recommendations for accommodations, interventions, and services that may help your child succeed academically and socially. These can include classroom accommodations, specialized instruction, or other supports tailored to your child’s needs.
